Description: The main arm of Huntington Creek runs along Highway 31 in Huntington Canyon between Skyline Drive and the town of Huntington. Access is easy; therefore, it receives a lot more pressure than out-of-the-way destinations. The roadis open in the winter, so this is a good place to hit the river and escape the winter blues. The Old Folks Flat Campground has nine camping sites and is along the highway about 4 miles south of Electric Lake. A six-unit campground called the Forks of Huntington is located where the left fork of the creek joins the main stem. Whirling disease was confirmed in Huntington Creek in 2006. Anglers are encouraged to clean their waders and boots before fishing somewhere after wading in Huntington Creek.
Fishing Index: Huntington is a popular classic fly-fishing stream. Regulations on sections of the creek keep specialized anglers separated. The upper reaches, from Electric Lake down to Engineers Canyon, is flies only. Many anglers are caught each year fishing with lures on this section because they believe the regulation is artificial only, not flies only. The fishâbrowns and cutthroatâare wary, so approach each hole carefully. The fish are selective. Often a fish will check out each fly only once. Presentation is important: One bad cast can spook all the fish in a run. Pale morning duns and caddis patterns are usually the top producers. Elk hair caddises in sizes 14 to 16 are good in brown, olive, and black. Caddis emergers are also a good choice at times. Midge action can be sensational just below the dam in the colder months. Golden stones are effective late in the spring, and terrestrials work in the later summer. Nymphs and streamers can be a good choice, but most fly fishers stick with dries.
Below Engineers Canyon, anglers can use any legal fishing tackle. Salmon eggs and night crawlers are good bait choices. Small Rapalas and spinners also work.
The Left Fork of Huntington Creek is a walk-in area, and pressure there is not as great. Fishing for brown and cutthroat trout can be exceptional. The Left Fork is artificial flies and lures only. Try flies similar to those recommended for the Right Fork. Terrestrials and attractors usually work better on the Left Fork than in the main creek.
